Smart Commute

Smart Commute

Smart Commute is a free program designed to help you reduce your carbon footprint, increase physical activity and engage in some friendly competition.  Smart commuting saves energy, reduces traffic flow, improves air quality and makes our region a better place to walk, bike, live and breathe!  Last year, our Smart Commuters made more than 6,400 smart commutes!

2012 Smart Commute Challenge

Teams from local businesses, schools, faith communities, neighbhorhoods and organizations team up to compete against one another from June 10 - June 23, 2012. Teams are divided into categories based on the number of participants. Winning teams earn prizes and top scores by completing the most smart commute trips and having the highest pecentage of participating members.

Smart Commute FAQs

Q:  What is a "smart commute"? What kind of trips count as smart commutes?

A:  A smart commute is any trip that is not one driver/one motorized vehicle. We count walking, biking, using public transit, ride sharing, telecommuting, paddling and using green cabs as smart commuting. For the 2012 Smart Commute Challenge, each round trip counts as 1 trip.

Q:  Why should I smart commute?

A:  You'll save some money on gas, improve your overall health by getting physical exercise and enjoy some friendly competition with other groups around the region.

Q:  I'm going to a conference/on vacation during the Challenge. Can I still participate?

A:  Yes! Being out of town is a great opportunity to try out public transit options or share rides with colleagues. If you're on vacation, walk to dinner or take a cab with the family.

Q:  I have an unusual Smart Commute question. What do I do?

A:  Call the office at (517) 292-3078 or email Alexis Ringman at alexis.midmeac@gmail.com.
